Topical Fluoride

Topical Fluoride vs. Ingested Fluoride

Topical Fluoride is placed on the teeth in the form of gel, foam, rinse or varnish.  It is safe to use continuously and helps to strengthen existing teeth

Ingested Fluoride from drinking water, vitamins or supplements aids in the development of teeth for young children. It should be used only with the direction of a dentist or pediatrician because  too much can actually damage developing teeth

Topical Fluoride Treatment
- Topical fluoride treatments are usually performed during an appointment with the hygienist.  Fluoride Varnish is put on the teeth.  It hardens and the teeth absorb this type of fluoride for up to six hours.  This type of fluoride helps to prevent decay and strengthens teeth by remineralizing them.  Studies have shown that patients who receive a Fluoride Varnish treatment every 6 months reduce their rate of cavities by 70% after two years.

Historically, this procedure has been performed once each year for children under the age of 13.  Recently, the Academy of General Dentistry and the American Dental Association have released findings that show topical fluoride treatments are beneficial for children and adults with risk factors for decay.  Because this type of fluoride is placed on the teeth and not swallowed, it is safe for use in conjunction with fluoride rinses, as well as fluoride prescribed by physicians.
We recommend topical fluoride for everyone with risk factors for cavities each time they see the hygienist.
